Ribera del Duero

Located along the Duero River in northern Spain, Ribera del Duero [ree-BEHR-ah del DWAY-roh] is halfway between Madrid and the Atlantic Ocean. The Duero River becomes the Douro (the famous Port river) in Portugal. Ribera del Duero is famous for its red wines. Several wine estates in this area have sparked a trend of attracting producers interested in producing high-quality red wines. The primary grape here is Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo), with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot rapidly becoming primary varietals as well.
