Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

The name Vino Nobile di Montepulciano [Vee-no No-bile dee Mawn-tay-pul-cheon-no] derives from two facts: the ancient town of Montepulciano, which sits atop a volcanic-rock hill surrounded by several vineyards, and the historic mindset that this wine was to be served at the tables of the nobility. Proudly designated as Italy’s first DOCG, Italian law requires that these wines be barrel-aged for at least one year, and matured in bottle for a minimum of three years before release. This wine is more delicate and fruity than the more austere wines of Chianti Classico, but it does resemble the medium- to full-bodied style of Chianti.
